Make The Ordinary Come Alive

A friend recently shared this poem with me as it really struck a cord with her:

Do not ask your children
to strive for extraordinary lives.
Such striving may seem admirable,
but it is a way of foolishness.
Help them instead to find the wonder
and the marvel of an ordinary life.
Show them the joy of tasting
tomatoes, apples and pears.
Show them how to cry
when pets and people die.
Show them the infinite pleasure
in the touch of a hand.
And make the ordinary come alive for them.
The extraordinary will take care of itself.

What a great way to view life. In our world when there’s such a push to be perfect and fabulous and famous instantly, I like the idea of bringing out the ordinary in our lives and making that the special moment.

If you have been reading my blog for a while you will notice I have made a slight change in my writing. I look around me everyday and see evidence of God, and that is what I write about.

I’m not special, I’m not famous and I’m not extraordinary. But I believe God doesn’t wait for the extraordinary to appear. He appears in the very ordinary. He is present everywhere.

And often when we find Him in the everyday then, just as this poem says, it “makes the ordinary come alive“.

Lord, You take the ordinary and make it extraordinary. Instead of looking inward at ourselves may we look to You to make our world come alive. Amen.
