Down At Your Level

It’s not rocket science, it’s just treating people equally.

Luke 6:17-26

Reference: He went down with them and stood on a level place. A large crowd of his disciples was there and a great number of people from all over Judea, from Jerusalem, and from the coastal region around Tyre and Sidon, (‭Luke‬ ‭6‬:‭17‬ NIV)

Explore: Over the years, many people have commented how well I deal with children. I’m always surprised by this comment because I wouldn’t really rate this as one of my strengths.

I like kids and I think how we treat them is very important, but I wouldn’t exactly call myself a child whisperer!

But after a while I realised why people were making these sorts of comments to me. It isn’t what I say to the children that impresses them, it is how I speak to children.

As much as I can, particularly when I need to address a challenging comment, I will crouch down to get onto the child’s level. If I can look them directly in the eye, then I feel it puts us on the same level and the child is more receptive to what I have to say.

It’s not rocket science, it’s just treating people equally.

Application: Jesus was the master of equality. And it would have been much harder for Him as He existed way above our standards.

But I love that Jesus, even when dealing with a large crowd, would bring Himself onto the same level as those He wanted to connect to.

He does the same with us today. He doesn’t live up in the clouds like a high and mighty Zeus style god. No, the Holy Spirit continues to move all throughout the world, at our level, prompting us to turn to God.

If you ever think you are too lowly for God, think of Jesus and how He came down to our level to show us how to live.

Prayer: Lord, forgive us when we think we are better than others. Help us to be more like You and desire to be on the same level as others. Amen.

Who do you need to get on the same level as?
