Keep Going Round

It brought back many memories from the ’80s

Luke 13:31-35

Explore: I recently went to a roller skating rink. It had been years since I’d been and it brought back many memories from the ’80s of Saturday afternoons skating round and round and round.

Thankfully it also brought back the ability to skate! It took me about five laps until I had become comfortable on my skates and was able to confidently glide around the rink.

There were many, however, who had not grown up in the ’80s and were just learning to skate. Clinging onto the side railing, they inched their way around the rink.

Just when they thought they had it, they would let go of the rail, only to plummet to the ground. A skating rink floor is hard and unrelenting and the looks on their faces reflected this.

But the children were not to be deterred. Up they would get and continue around until they fell again and again and again.

I admired the children. As an adult, if I failed that many times I would give up. But they preserved longer than any adult on the rink.

Application: It’s sad that our perseverance often falters as we get older. Children are learning new things every day, but as adults we like to stick to what we know.

This behaviour certainly wasn’t taught to us by Christ. His tenacity and perseverance to push ahead and keep going, even under great persecution, was incredible.

If you need some motivation to keep going, read the gospels about Christ. Each and every day He pushed forward, even unto a devastating death.

Prayer: Lord, may we not give up. Help us to be so committed to our call that we will continue to rise and push forward towards you. Amen.
