Already this child could not stand still.
Reference: Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth, burst into jubilant song with music; (Psalm 98:4 NIV)
Explore: I was waiting at a set of lights at a major intersection and I saw a young boy standing with his mother waiting to cross the road. It was the start of the day, but already this child could not stand still.
He was probably 50 metres away from me but even from that distance I could see how animated he was. He was swinging his arms, skipping his feet and showing many expressions on his face.
As a large truck came up to the intersection to pass him by, this young boy became even more enthusiastic. He thrust his arm up into the air and pulled his fist down in the universal language of asking a truck driver to honk his horn.
As the truck made its way through the intersection he pulled on his air horn sending a loud honk throughout the air. I quickly turned to look at the boy and wondered if he had burst with excitement.
He was still in one piece, however, his enthusiasm exuded from every fibre of his being. He jumped up and down, raised his arms in the air and threw his head back in delight. He was one happy boy.
Application: All it took was a truck driver to honk his horn and this boy was ecstatic. That being said, he was already in a state of joy before the truck even came into sight.
God is so much more than a truck’s horn, and yet we are often tardy and apathetic when it comes to our enthusiasm about Him. Are we too grown up to throw our arms in the air in celebration of our God?
Maybe the problem is that we aren’t in a joyful state to begin with. When we enter each day with a glad heart then we are more likely to see the wonders of His world.
As I smiled at this young boy’s delight, I was inspired to bring out the joy in my own life. If we are willing to start the day with joy then we are more open to experiencing more of God’s glory in our every day.
Prayer: Lord, may I bring out the joy in my heart and have a childlike enthusiasm for You each day. Amen.
How can you add joy to your day?
