It seems that Joseph was actually a bit of a prat.
Reference: “Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him all the more.” Genesis 37:5 NIV
Explore: Joseph and his Technicoloured Dream Coat is one of the most well known musicals. The way it retells an incredible Bible story is poetic and creative.
But when you open the Bible and read this story from the original text, it reminds me of some important truths.
It seems Joseph was actually a bit of a prat. He was favoured by his father and either wasn’t aware of his brother’s dislike towards him or didn’t care.
Application: While I would hope I wouldn’t go to the extreme of Joseph’s brothers behaviour, there are times when I struggle to like others too. I may not try to remove them from the family, but I certainly find ways to exclude them from other things.
One important thing I do learn from Joseph’s story is that even though he may have been annoying to his brothers, he did have feelings. No matter how we feel towards another person we must not forget they have feelings too and are impacted by the actions of others.
Prayer: Lord, help me to see life from someone else’s perspective. May I always lead with compassion over judgement. Amen.
When has someone got under your skin? How did you react?
