It’s A Wrap

I was recently wrapping a number of presents for the children in our mother’s group. We have all come together because our children are born around the same time. That means lots of birthdays at the same time too!

I don’t mind wrapping presents – especially easy things like books and boxes – but it always seems a bit of a hassle getting everything out to prepare for the wrap. There’s all the rolls of paper, the scissors, the sticky tape and then finding a clear space on the table that’s big enough for me to spread out and wrap my gifts.

I’d finally got everything set up but before I started placing the paper over the gift I started sectioning off the sticky tape. Our four year old saw me wrapping presents but couldn’t understand why I was taking out so much sticky tape. I explained I would need all the tape I’d put out on the table but I was cutting it up early so when my hands were holding the wrapping paper down it would be easy for me to reach for the tape.

Sure enough, as I started wrapping the present it wasn’t long before I needed a piece of sticky tape. Going to the edge of the table it was easy for me to just rip off a piece of tape and place it on the gift.

While the set up was a bit onerous it made wrapping a quick and simple task.

To make my life easier, preparation is key. And I feel this works for my faith as well.

We don’t always know when the big decisions or tricky faith situations are going to come our way. But if we have kept up to date with all our spiritual disciplines – praying, reading the Bible, tithing, serving – then we are well prepared for when a bigger task comes our way.

God is always there for us, all we need to do is commit to connecting with Him, a little every day, to prepare ourselves for all that is to come.

Lord, we cannot always be fully prepared for what life may bring but connecting regularly with You certainly helps to equip us for what is ahead. Amen.

How can you equip yourself for the future?
