Injustice In Illness

As with most diseases, they don’t discriminate

Exodus 21:1-36

Reference: ““If anyone’s bull injures someone else’s bull and it dies, the two parties are to sell the live one and divide both the money and the dead animal equally.” ‭‭Exodus‬ ‭21:35‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Explore: I was recently talking to an oncology nurse about her work. She mentioned that, even after all these years on the job, she still struggled with good, young people dying from cancer.

It wasn’t necessarily the passing of the person that seemed as difficult as observing the young families who were left behind. As with most diseases, they don’t discriminate and good, young people often fall their victims.

There is often no justice or fairness in disease. It can often really challenge people’s faith when someone they love and admire becomes terminally ill.

Application: Reading through Exodus 21 it lists all the different consequences that should be carried out for certain behaviours. If this happens then that is the punishment. These were directives from God given to the Israelite people.

While a lot of these examples don’t apply to my life today (owning a bull or a slave) it did highlight God’s justice. He outlined what was fair and right for their situation.

When I speak to someone like an oncology nurse I am reminded that we live in a fallen world, where injustice still prevails and good people succumb to disease. However, when I read through the Bible, I am reminded that is not the way of our Heavenly Father.

God strives for fairness and justice. That is how Heaven must be. Not susceptible to the ravages of sin and death but ruled with love and justice.

Prayer: Lord, there is not always justice in our fallen world but we continue to look to You for love and grace to reign. Amen.

When have you experienced injustice in our fallen world?
