They act like the world revolves around them and anything outside their hemisphere is not worth knowing about.
Reference: v.17 But, “Let those who boast boast in the Lord.” (TNIV Bible)
Explore: My husband has a humorous saying, “I’m a pretty big deal around here.” He says this when someone gives him any kind of compliment.
If a friend were to say to Cam, ‘Hey, I met someone who knows you,’ this would be a perfect opportunity for Cam to say, “Of course you did, I’m a pretty big deal around here.”
It’s very much tongue-in-cheek, as everyone is fully aware that Cam is not famous in any way, I guess that’s what makes it so funny.
Thankfully, we know Cam is joking, however, there are some people who go around truly thinking that they are a pretty big deal. They act like the world revolves around them and anything outside their hemisphere is not worth knowing about.
Application: The Apostle Paul had a great deal to boast about. He planted many churches, shared the gospel with thousands of people and encouraged believers in their faith. And yet, even he didn’t go as far as to say, “I’m a pretty big deal.”
No, Paul was firm in saying, ‘Let those who boast boast in the Lord.’
God really puts things in perspective for us. If we ever feel like we’ve got it all together and we’re pretty impressive, we just need to look to God to realise we haven’t quite made it yet!
God has given us many things. If ever we are to boast, let’s give Him all the glory.
Prayer: Lord, we are nothing compared to You. Thank you for loving us so much that You trust us with the gifts You’ve bestowed upon us. May we not boast in our own abilities but boast in You. Amen.
How can you boast in the Lord today?
