I Know Best

Everything within me just wants to break the law

Exodus 16:1-36

Reference: v.7 …and in the morning you will see the glory of the Lord, because he has heard your grumbling against him. Who are we, that you should grumble against us?” (TNIV Bible)

Explore: There is a piece of road I drive down every single work morning that really frustrates me. For nearly 2kms the road is straight with no houses and only one intersection and yet it is 60km/h the whole way. It is so annoying – particularly because when I’m driving along this piece of road it’s 5am and there are also no cars on the road. Everything within me just wants to break the law and drive 70 or 80km/h to get down this straight road quicker, and yet I’m restricted to do so.  Every day I drive down this road I think I know better… and yet, I have no idea what reasoning went into the speed limit on this particular stretch of road.  It wasn’t until a couple of weeks ago that I looked more closely at the buildings near this road and discovered there was a retirement village that ran most of the way along it. It was hard to see due to the tall bushes that ran along its boundary line, but I realised this was the cause for the slower speed limit. While it still pushes the buttons of my impatience, I can now see how the authorities have made the correct decision by having greater knowledge than I first had.

Application: When it comes to trusting authority, some people are better than others.  The Israelites certainly struggled to trust God as the ultimate authority when they started their journey through the desert. Just like me driving to work, they thought they knew everything there was to know, and yet they were proven very wrong. They couldn’t always see what God’s plan was, and so often they doubted Him, and yet He always had their best interests at heart.

Prayer: Lord God, you care for us so much that you truly have our best interests at heart. Forgive us when we think that we know best. Amen.

What is God’s big picture plan for you?
