I Did Not Sign Up For This

Life seems dandier when we are just cruising through

1 Samuel 10:1-27

Reference: v. 22 So they inquired further of the Lord, “Has the man come here yet?” And the Lord said, “Yes, he has hidden himself among the supplies.” (TNIV Bible)

Explore: There are some things that I willingly put my hand up for… there are others that I do not.

Chocolate, a pay rise, movie tickets, jokes and laughter are all things I’m quick to jump towards. Stress, pressure, expectations and working overtime often come my way, but I’m confident I did not sign up for any of it.

While a life filled with the former items would be wonderfully bliss, I’m not sure that I would feel content and having purpose if that was all that resulted from my life. Sometimes we need to experience the latter to be able to accomplish all that we’re capable of.

Life seems dandier when we are just cruising through, however, it’s not until we endure hardship that we grow and redefine who we are and where we’re heading.

Application: When we hear of the mighty leaders from the Bible I would think that they just ran into all that God had in store for them. However, if you dig a little deeper you discover that it’s not always the case. Moses tried to persuade God to choose someone else and here we have Saul – the first king of God’s chosen people – hiding in the store room!

I almost skipped over this verse but then realised this mighty man had a very humble beginning.

Our journey often takes us along rocky roads and dangerous paths. There are times when we want to turn around and run in the opposite direction, however, sometimes these are the roads that can change us for the better.

If God calls us to a particular journey, He is going to be there each step of the way – even if each step brings fear and trepidation. It is during those times that our faith grows the most, as all we have to rely on is our mighty Father in Heaven.

Prayer: Lord, forgive us when we run in the opposite direction to Your call for us. May we have the strength to rely completely on You and sign up for the task, no matter how daunting it may seem. Amen.

What did you not sign up for? How is it helping you in your walk with God?
