I Can See Clearly Now
It only becomes clear once the glasses are being worn
Reference: He looked up and said, “I see people; they look like trees walking around.” (Mark 8:24 TNIV)
Explore: I have a friend who, although fairly visually impaired, puts her make up on without her glasses. As she’s in her forties she has been applying make up for quite some time and has a pretty good knowledge of her own face.
Applying the precise details, like eyeliner and mascara, are her greatest challenges. Yet with both of these being applied to her eyes, there is very little chance she can do this with her visual aids.
She has told me that she’s looked in the mirror on a number of occasions and been impressed at her handiwork, only to then put on her glasses and notice the obvious mistakes. An uneven eyebrow or a different shade of eye shadow would be obvious to most, but only becomes clear to my friend once her glasses are being worn.
Application: While I can see my make up application clearly, there are other things in my life that seem a lot more hazy. What my future will look like, where my career will take me, how good my family’s health will be.
These are all things of great importance to me and yet, so often, it all looks unclear.
It’s not until time has passed that I look back and realise how everything has worked together for the best. While things were challenging, time has brought clarity and meaning.
I often look to the future and notice only blurry trees (like the blind man in Mark 8) or a fuzziness of my own reflection (like my friend applying make up). If I continue to live according to my own needs and pleasures, I find that haziness remains. However, if I’m willing to look beyond myself, and see everything through God’s eyes, I know that while still unclear, my future is safe and fulfilled in God’s hands.
Prayer: Lord, give me the confidence to step through the haziness and trust that my future is secure in Your hands. Amen.
