Explore: On social media I follow an American author by the name Jon Acuff. He doesn’t take himself too seriously, but is committed to writing helpful blogs on what it is to be a Christian in today’s world.
He’s very observant on current culture and I appreciate his witty sense of humour.
The other day he posted a photo taken from his hotel window. As he travels a lot with his work he will often show off the stunning sights he experiences.
This photo brought a touch of reality.
While he was clearly a few floors up, the best view he could see from his window was a construction site! It was all dirt and far from a panoramic postcard vista.
He mentioned in his post that usually he will post the beauty in his travels, but it’s important to see the realities of his life too.
Application: So often we only display the glamour of our lives and not the reality. We try to hide the areas we think are not for public consumption, so as to present ourselves in the best possible light.
Even though they didn’t have social media to do this, the Pharisees and teachers of the law in Jesus’ day did the same thing. They moved around in the right social circles, they spoke with self importance and they positioned themselves in the highest places.
Jesus, however, challenged the view they portrayed. He challenged them on their actions and publicly questioned their positions of importance.
The truth is sometimes hard to handle, but when it comes from God then it’s time to sit up and take notice.
Let’s be honest, there will be ugly parts to each of our lives. Let’s be willing to address them and allow God to give us discernment through the changes that need to happen.
Prayer: Lord, help me to see the truth of my life and work towards making it more Christlike in every way. Amen.
What area of your life honestly needs to change?
