Hold It Close or Let It Go

Unless something is nailed down I will throw it out!

Proverbs 7:1-27

Reference: “My son, keep my words and store up my commands within you.” Proverbs‬ ‭7:1‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Explore: I am the opposite of a hoarder. Unless something is nailed down or used on a regular basis I will throw it out!

It’s not that I have an incredibly clean house, I just don’t like unnecessary things hanging around. If you have given me something and I have kept it, you must be very special to me!!

My husband chastises me for having no sense of history and jokes that he better keep pulling his weight or I might get rid of him too!

Application: But I keep a couple of boxes of things that are very special to me. The writing book from my first year of school; the flower girl dress I wore when I was six for my cousin’s wedding; the pins that held my bone together when I broke my finger in year seven; the journal my friend and I wrote to each other when I went to boarding school; a love letter from my first serious boyfriend… If something is truly significant then I will keep it.

We can keep things within ourselves too. Unfortunately, I still hold onto the feeling I had as a teenager that I was not wanted. And so, whenever that comes up in my life I have to push it aside to speak grace and acceptance into who I am. This is something I should throw away with all the unnecessary items in my life.

There are truths, however, that are important to hold onto. These are words that come from God and He desires for us to keep them in our lives.

Read through the Bible and you will hear these truths again: You are valuable; I love you; do not be afraid… These are the things we must hold onto and they will make us greater disciples of God.

Prayer: Lord, at times it is hard to let go of something we have held for so long. Give us Your discernment to know what we need to let go. Amen.

What idea inside of you is not from God and needs to be let go?
