No Hobbies

I heard someone once say that interesting people have interests

Psalm 31:1-24

Reference: Into your hands I commit my spirit; deliver me, Lord, my faithful God. (Psalm 31:5 NIV)

Explore: I’ve never had a lot of hobbies and I always saw this as a bad thing. I heard someone once say that interesting people have interests, so I resigned myself to not being very interesting.

After recently applying for a new job, I realised why hobbies have never really been my thing. I like to give 100% of myself to what I do.

A hobby is something you like to do that you pick up when you have the time. I try to commit myself so fully to what I’m already doing, I don’t leave any time for a hobby. If a hobby starts slipping into my life, I end up frustrated that I can’t put more time into it and lose interest.

It’s not that I’m not interesting, it’s that I like to commit fully to whatever I set out to accomplish.

Application: In Psalm 31, the writer commits his spirit into God’s hands. When I first read this verse it sounded like something that would be read at a funeral. Once someone dies their spirit is committed wholly over to God.

But I didn’t get the sense this writer was on his death bed. Imagine if we committed ourselves fully to God, even before we passed on from this world.

That means that everything we did would have the purpose of glorifying God. I guess that’s what it is to be a disciple. We put off our selfish ambitions and live to represent God in our world.

Let’s not make our faith a hobby, but let’s commit our spirit over to God now, so that all we do brings glory to His name.

Prayer: Lord, You are more than a mere interest in our lives. You are the reason that we get up in the morning. May we live in such a way that we commit our lives to You and focus on bringing glory to Your name in all we do and say. Amen.

How can you bring God into all the activities of your day?
