History Repeated

'40 killed in terrorist bomb in India'.

Lamentations 4:1-22

Reference:  v.22  O Daughter of Zion, your punishment will end; he will not prolong your exile.  But, O Daughter of Edom, he will punish your sin and expose your wickedness.  (NIV Bible)

Explore:  The other day my mother was showing my sisters and me some of my grandfather's old Scottish kilts.  I had never met my grandfather but my mother had kept two of his Scottish outfits.  She had stored them very well in an old chest at home and one of his jackets had been wrapped in newspaper when they travelled over from the UK.  When I took a closer look at the paper I noticed the heading, '40 killed in terrorist bomb in India'.  This kind of heading had crossed our newpaper pages regularly in the last decade, so I looked closer at the page to see the date of this paper.  The year was printed: 1966.  I was so naive to think that terrorist bombing was something new, and yet I was shocked to read that it had been happening for so many years.  The next time I read the newspaper online and found a similar article I felt that history was repeating itself.

Application:  When the people of Judah were taken in to exile they went into absolute despair.  And yet God had been warning them again and again that this would happen.  They had not learned from their mistakes and so history had repeated itself.  Over and over they had turned away from God and so finally God showed them what it was really like to be distant from Him.  These stories are a great reminder to us of what history was like.  But it is important that we learn from them so that history is not repeated in our own lives.  As we read through Lamentations we are reminded of pain that comes in to our lives but how the grief is made so much worse when we don't have God there to give us hope.  May we read these pages and set in our hearts not to repeat the history of our Biblical forefathers.

Prayer:  Lord, may we not repeat history but pave our own path of trust and faith in You.  Amen.

Is there a sin that continues to come up in your life?  How can you stop history from repeating?
