Hearing Your Voice

As soon as I talk, he recognises my voice

John 10:1-6

Reference: “But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice.”” ‭‭John‬ ‭10:5‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Explore: Each day I pick up our toddler from daycare I like to watch him play before he notices me. It’s a good chance to see him interact with other children and get involved with activities without my presence distracting him.

As soon as I talk, he recognises my voice and comes running for me to lift him up. I don’t even have to say his name; any words from my mouth triggers this reaction in him.

He’s not even quite three yet and already he identifies me just from the sound of my voice.

Application: When Jesus speaks of being the good shepherd He mentions that His sheep recognise His voice.

Therefore they will never follow another because their voice will sound different.

This is a great challenge for us sheep (followers of Jesus). Do you know Jesus’ voice (His call, wisdom and guidance) so well that you only follow Him?

I have to admit that sometimes other voices seem so much more appealing and I try to justify them as sounding like Jesus. But the more we know about our Saviour, the more we can recognise His voice amongst all the other noise.

That is why it’s so important to read God’s word, to go to church, to have Biblical discussions. The more we explore and dwell in His presence, the clearer our Shepherd’s voice becomes.

Prayer: Lord, forgive me when I convince myself that someone else’s words are yours. May I continue to explore You so that I have greater clarity in hearing Your voice. Amen.

How well do you recognise Jesus’ voice?
