We had heard that the waterfalls were amazing and so we jumped on-board a bus
Reference: 12-13 Now when I went to Troas to preach the gospel of Christ and found that the Lord had opened a door for me, I still had no peace of mind, because I did not find my brother Titus there. So I said good-by to them and went on to Macedonia. (TNIV Bible)
Explore: A couple of months ago Cameron and I went on holidays. As we were exploring a new area we took a tour of one of the nearby islands.
We had heard that the waterfalls were amazing and so we jumped on-board a bus and set out around the island. The tour guide was excellent. She gave great information and was well versed in the natural surroundings as well as the culture.
We stopped off at a beautiful beach with a natural blowhole, some stunning gardens, and a local holy site. We also met a great couple who were really friendly and we connected with them so easily.
However, when we arrived back at our drop off point we realised we had not seen any amazing waterfalls… we’d taken the wrong tour!
Application: Life does not always go according to plan. There are times when we think we’re heading in the right direction only to discover that the journey was not what we had first imagined.
The great thing about following such an ever-present God is that it doesn’t matter where we go or what we do, He will always be there for us. While we think there is only one right path we soon learn that God is there for us no matter what path we take.
Just like our island tour: we didn’t get to see the waterfalls, but we saw some amazing sites and ended up making friends with a couple who made our whole holiday even more enjoyable.
Paul the Apostle found a similar situation in his mission journey. He saw a door had opened in one direction, but it didn’t work out. This did not mean that God had fooled him or led him astray. Paul goes on to say that we are able to spread the ‘aroma’ of God everywhere, no matter where we go.
Plans don’t always go our way, but we trust in a God who has our best interests at heart. No matter where our path leads we are able to serve God and God is able to show us His love.
Prayer: Lord, there are times when we get stuck on one particular route. Help us to see that You are present no matter where life may lead us. Amen.
When has your life taken a different turn? Where did you see God in the new direction?
