Someone finally explained it to me
Reference: “Her leaders judge for a bribe, her priests teach for a price, and her prophets tell fortunes for money. Yet they look for the Lord’s support and say, “Is not the Lord among us? No disaster will come upon us.”” Micah 3:11 NIV
Explore: I have only just discovered how the saying “you can’t have your cake and eat it too” works. While I understood the meaning of this saying I didn’t understand how you weren’t “having” your cake if you were eating it.
But someone finally explained that you could not keep your cake (therefore having it long term) if you have eaten it. That aligns much more with the meaning of this saying.
Although I was always quietly confused by the wording of this saying, I knew its intent: you can’t have two incompatible things. And yet often we do.
We want to earn lots of money but not work too hard. We want to be social butterflies but after a hard day at work we can’t be bothered getting off the couch. We want to be intelligent and productive but we end up watching soapies or sitcoms on TV.
Application: It’s ok, we’re not alone. Many people before us have wanted to have their cake and eat it too – that’s how the saying came to being. In fact, we even read about these type of people in Micah 3.
Although God’s people had turned away from Him, they still wanted His protection and support. From the sounds of the prophet’s prediction of their future, I hope they didn’t like the taste of cake!!
Already we have more than we deserve. God offers us amazing grace which none of us are worthy of.
Let’s be reasonable with how we live the rest of our lives. Let’s pick a path to follow and stick to it so that our destination and intention is clear.
Prayer: Lord, thank You for giving us more than we deserve. May we be clear with our desires and follow through with hard work and determination. Amen.
Are you expecting two incompatible things in your life?
