Grand Graves

Some tombstones are so grand that the grave plot is actually fenced off to protect the craftsmanship of the stonework.

Deuteronomy 34:1-12

Reference:  v.6  He buried him in Moab, in the valley opposite Beth Peor, but to this day no one knows where his grave is. (NIV Bible)

 

Explore:  Moses never got to enter in to the Promised Land.  He confronted Pharaoh, escorted the Israelites out of Egypt, led them through the desert for forty years, defended them to God (even though they continually whinged) and yet he did not get to step foot in to the land they were heading towards.  And while he was buried and mourned for in Moab, his grave is no longer remembered.  Even by the time this piece of scripture was written they were unable to retrace where Moses' grave was.  People can not go to one place to remember him; they can not read his epitaph; they can not lay flowers on his grave.  However, while his grave can not be found, his life continues to resound throughout history.  Moses is known today as one of the great men of our faith. He did mighty things through the power of God and God used him in remarkable ways.  The location of his grave is not important, but the life that he led speaks volumes.

Application:   If you are to walk through a cemetery you are able to see some beautiful tombstones .  Some are so grand that the grave plot is actually fenced off to protect the craftsmanship of the stonework.  And yet I would rather have led a life that shines long after I'm gone rather than a tombstone that looks grand to those who did not know me.  We all have the opportunity to be like Moses, even though we can no longer trace where his dead bones are buried we are able to learn so much about God through his life.  That is the best epitaph anyone can leave behind.

Prayer:  Lord, help us to embrace this life that You have given us and live life to its fullest everyday.  Amen.
