Abraham's servant certainly gave God specific details so he could determine which female to take back to his master.
Genesis 24:1-67

Explore: So, I feel like I need to apologize for how long this passage is today, but it is such a great part of Abraham's family story that I didn't want to break it up. Here Abraham sends his servant to find a wife for his son. And when the servant prays to God for particular events to occur, they happen through Rebekah. The servant certainly gave God specific details so he could determine which female to take back to his master. She had to be coming to the well just as the servant was at the well – check; She had to give him a drink – check; and then she had to give a drink to his camels too – check. And yet, even when she had done all of this off her on bat, the servant still "watched her closely" just to make sure that she was definitely the one.
Application: I often find that the Lord works in such mysterious ways that even if I noticed one of these specifics occurring I'd be like, "Lock it in, it must be from God!" But the servant was wise. He did not jump into things too quickly and he was patient even though he desired to take a wife back for his master's son. He noticed the answers to his prayers, he presented her with the right gifts, he spoke to her parents and all these things confirmed in him that Rebekah was the right one. It was only after all of these things that he was then keen to get straight back to his master.
Often I jump in too quickly without truly discerning from God what is right. I do believe that God gives us the ability to make right choices and if we are seeking Him and discerning His way then He gives us the wisdom to discern. However, sometimes there are bigger things in life where it is important not to jump in too quickly, but to mull it over with God. Just like Abraham's servant, sometimes we need to check off a more detailed check-list and be patient to see what God reveals.
Prayer: Lord, I am often too impatient to wait upon You. May I learn to see things in Your timing and not my busyness. Amen.
Is there something you are seeking from God at the moment? Spend this time asking for wisdom and guidance.
