There is no breaking news every time I complete a load of washing
Reference: Now Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was going on. And he was perplexed because some were saying that John had been raised from the dead, (Luke 9:7 NIV)
Explore: Most of the work I do goes unnoticed. I’m not whinging, I’m stating the obvious for most people.
There is no breaking news every time I complete a load of washing, there’s no round of applause when I send an email and I don’t even get a pat on the back when I lead a meeting. It’s not that I’m under appreciated, it’s just how it is for everyone.
It’s nice when you do get recognition for something well done. It usually takes an extraordinary act, but there are things I’ve done that are appreciated.
My family will thank me for cooking their favourite meal, my boss will acknowledge some exceptional work amongst colleagues and I’ve even had an email from a CEO with some words of praise for a job well done. These have all been great, but I’m pretty sure that’s as far as it’s gone.
Imagine if the King, Queen, or President of your country noticed something you did. That would have to be pretty outstanding!
Application: That’s what happened to the disciples. They started living out God’s calling and the King heard about it!
I have to be careful not to do things just to get noticed. I like to be appreciated for the work I do, but it shouldn’t be my driving force.
Unless the appreciation I am after is from the King of Kings, of course.
When it’s His attention we want to attract, then we are doing similar things to Jesus’ disciples – living out our calling to bring people into wholeness with God. If that was our mission each day then you could guarantee you’d get God’s attention.
Prayer: Lord, may I strive for Your attention, not the praise of fellow humans. Amen.
How can you attract God’s attention today?
