Whenever it came to my turn to answer a question, I would umm and ahh and when I finally responded I would hesitantly and quietly give my answer
Reference: After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly. (Acts 4:31 NIV)
Explore: I was recently playing a trivia game with a group of friends. While I love playing card games and board games, I must admit that trivia is not my strongest hand.
Whenever it came to my turn to answer a question, I would umm and ahh and when I finally responded I would hesitantly and quietly give my answer. If I was right I would smile in surprise and if I was wrong I would roll my eyes and laugh at myself.
My husband has an uncanny ability to remember any piece of useless information. So when it was his turn to answer a question he would enthusiastically listen to the question and then jump in eagerly and loudly with his response.
The questions we were asked were the same level of difficulty, however, my husband and I approached the answers completely differently. I was hesitant whereas he was bold.
Application: After Jesus went up into heaven, the disciples endured many hardships. They were questioned, jailed, flogged and some were even killed because of their fervent commitment to Jesus being Christ.
It was clear how these disciples confronted their hardships. They weren’t hesitant and reserved like I was when it came to trivia questions. Instead they were firm in their convictions and came boldly.
When it comes to trivia, all I have to lose is a silly game and some self respect! However, when the disciples came up against difficulties they were actually putting their lives on the line.
There isn’t any doubt that each of our lives will bring challenges and hardships. When – not if – they come, may we be filled with the Holy Spirit in such a way that we walk boldly towards what our future holds.
Prayer: Lord, there are times when I feel timid about the future. May Your Spirit fill me in such a way that I have courage to face what lies ahead. Amen.
Do you feel that you are heading towards your future boldly or hesitantly?
