I was recently filling a large tub of toys for our boys. It was all part of my plan to keep the house tidy!
I had hardly cleaned up any of the toys when I realised the tub was already full. I piled as many toys into the tub as I possibly could but there was just no more room.
I recognised I had two options: either get rid of some toys or get a bigger tub!
There are times when we find ourselves in the same situation within our own lives. Life is full already but there are more things vying for our space. We try to squeeze as much as we can into our lives but it gets to a point where nothing else will fit.
It’s at this point we start looking for a bigger tub! But all of us have been gifted with the same amount of time each day. It’s just a matter of how discerning we are in how we use our time.
Mary and Martha had different priorities for how to use their time. While Mary was willing to allow some space for relationship, Martha was very task oriented.
I understand where Martha was coming from. I try to fit everything into my day, too busy to take note of people around me. I don’t have the time!
But filling the tub with toys reminded me I don’t have the option to find a bigger tub, I need to be more discerning as to how I fill my tub in the first place.
God, give me discernment. Help me to know what to keep in my life and what to let go. Amen.
What is cramping your life at the moment?
