Fred Hollows

Taking them from blindness to sight

Joshua 13:1-33

Reference: “When Joshua had grown old, the Lord said to him, “You are now very old, and there are still very large areas of land to be taken over.” Joshua‬ ‭13:1‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Explore: Fred Hollows was an New Zealand/Australian ophthalmologist who went to poor communities to remove cataracts from people’s eyes, taking them from blindness to sight with such a simple procedure. He established labs to manufacture the intra-ocular lens (that replaces the cloudy cataract lens when it’s removed) which lasts a lifetime so that even those who can’t access good eye health can have clear vision for the rest of their time.

It is said that a million people have received eye health through the work of Fred Hollows. What an incredible impact on our world!

Fred Hollows passed away in 1993. In our world today there are still almost 20 million people living with cataracts – a completely treatable condition and yet it renders people blind.

While Hollows did an incredible job, there is still more work to do.

Application: The work to make our world a better place never goes away. There is always more we can do.

When Joshua, from the Bible, was old there was still much God had in store for His people. But if you look back at Joshua’s life you see God did amazing things through him too.

We cannot do everything, but we can all do something. When we come to the end of our lives may we be able to look back with pride to see we gave it all we had.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for opening our eyes to needs. May we continue to persevere, even when the task ahead seems so large. Amen.

What mighty task do you have ahead of you?
