Explore: Before my uncle retired he was recognised as a very successful businessman. He had built a company from nothing and set his family up for life.

From a wealth perspective he seemed to have everything in his life sorted.

Although I was only starting out in my career it was clear I was going to take a different path to my uncle.

Having trained in theology I looked at where God could use me rather than where I would make the most money.

My uncle struggled with this thinking. Although I was very financially wise, it was not the main focus of my life.

He was happy to openly call me foolish when I mentioned a job opportunity I was considering. He knew I could earn more money elsewhere and couldn’t believe I would look into any kind of not-for-profit work.

Application: My uncle is not the only person in this world who makes decisions based on finances rather than faith. I’m a big believer in being able to support myself, but I’m an even bigger believer in God.

When people who don’t have a faith look at the decisions we make, we can look incredibly foolish. But it’s hard for them to understand the motives behind our choices.

There are times when we’re called to go against the ways of our current culture, even if it seems foolish.

Prayer: Lord, You know our hearts and our motives. May we live for You in all we do. Amen.
