I thought I must have got the address wrong
Reference: The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you. (Genesis 12:1 NIV)
Explore: It’s so disheartening when you think you have reached your final destination, only to realise you still have a part of the journey to go.
A few years ago I travelled to another state of Australia by car. We drove all through the day and neared our final destination as the sun was setting.
I thought our accommodation was near and so I typed the address into our GPS. When it told me we still had two hours to go, I thought I must have got the address wrong.
I typed it in three more times, each time getting the same result.
It was pitch black and we were very tired when we finally pulled into our accommodation. It was a long trip, but it seemed even longer because I was anticipating finishing two hours earlier.
Application: There are lots of journeys we all go on throughout our lives. Some are long and some are quite short.
One thing I have learned in my faith is that God often suggests we go the extra mile. His calling is often in the journey after you think you’ve already arrived!
Abram had already been on a journey with his earthly father but his Heavenly Father called him to travel further. When he was obedient to that calling, he was blessed beyond belief.
I find the blessings often come from travelling the extra journey God has called us to. It sounds glamorous but it’s often not.
The extra mile might be dropping a colleague off home even when you’re exhausted, you find them annoying and they live in the opposite direction to where you are going!
The extra mile might be cooking a friend in need a meal, even though you already have to cook for your family and you have ten loads of washing to fold.
The extra mile looks different for each person. God doesn’t demand we go on it, but when it’s a suggestion He gives us it becomes an opportunity for Him to bless us.
Don’t get comfortable in what you think is your final destination, God may have an unexpected blessing in store for you.
Prayer: Lord, Your blessings are amazing, but often require us to go the extra mile. May we be obedient to Your call, not our desires. Amen.
Where is God calling you to?
