Every teenager watched it as they were growing up
Reference: Moses and Aaron were among his priests, Samuel was among those who called on his name; they called on the Lord and he answered them. (Psalm 99:6 NIV)
Explore: The secondary school I went to wasn’t huge but it had one claim to fame… Guy Pearce went there! Now, if you’re not Australian you may not recognise the name, but he is one of our most successful actors.
He started out on a local drama every teenager watched as they were growing up. He moved on to some Australian film productions and then launched into the American scene with LA Confidential.
Now he plays diverse roles in movies like Iron Man 3, the King’s Speech and Bedtime Stories.
So, when people ask me which school I attended they may look blankly when I mention the school’s name. However when I say, “Guy Pearce went there”, they all raise their eyebrows and say “Ohhhhh!”
Application: People are important to people. It’s okay meeting someone new, but if you discover you have a mutual friend, then it can lead to a far greater connection.
Even the psalmist allowed us to connect with God by mentioning a few people we may know. I’m not sure you can call it “name dropping” but it was a way for the psalmist to back up their point.
If people like Samuel and Moses related to God, then surely we can connect with Him too.
It is critical for us to have our own relationship with God, but it’s also good to be around others who love Him in the same way. We can get encouragement from those who also connect to God and by seeing their faith it can inspire our faith in God too.
Prayer: Lord, You are so immense that all people, with all their personalities, can relate to You. May we not limit You to our own expression of faith. Amen.
What community helps you to connect with God?
