Falling On Deaf Ears

Why would they bother changing when their life was so good?

Amos 1:1-15

Reference: “The words of Amos, one of the shepherds of Tekoa—the vision he saw concerning Israel two years before the earthquake, when Uzziah was king of Judah and Jeroboam son of Jehoash was king of Israel.” Amos‬ ‭1:1‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Explore: When we travelled to the Philippines for a short term mission trip we saw the incredible generosity of the people. Even those who had so little shared what they had as a way of sharing God’s love with those who didn’t know Him.

Feeding programs were a great way of providing much needed nutrients for those in need and a great avenue to connect with people about the love of God.

I remember talking about this evangelism strategy in relation to our own context in a developed country. We often struggle to connect with people in their time of need as our government is so supportive of those with little income and our health sector is so helpful to those in medical need.

Where does the church come in to help? How can our voice of God’s ultimate love be heard above all the other supportive voices?

Application: When the prophet Amos spoke to the people of how their destructive actions were not following God’s ways, he struggled to be heard. The people were existing in a time of prosperity. Why would they bother changing when their life was so good?

But Amos was not deterred to speak out God’s voice to the people. He couldn’t make a choice for them, but he could help them know what was right and wrong.

We are in the same situation as Amos. We can’t make a decision for anyone else – not even our children, our family or our closest friends – but we can show them with our actions and tell them with our words the way God would have us live.

Prayer: Lord, may we have the courage and the persistence to keep speaking Your way into our world. Amen.

How do you communicate God’s way to your unbelieving friends and family?
