Election Promises

History shows us that it probably won’t be long before the elected party will turn around on their promises.

Joshua 22:1-34

Reference: “But be very careful to keep the commandment and the law that Moses the servant of the Lord gave you: to love the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, to keep his commands, to hold fast to him and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.”” ‭‭Joshua‬ ‭22:5‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Explore: We have just gone through a federal election in our nation. For a period of time the multiple parties proclaimed their positions until it was the day for us to all go and vote.

It is always hard to decide which party to vote for as it is rare to find one group that supports all your values and beliefs. While the promises seem so grand in the lead up to the election, history shows us that it probably won’t be long before the elected party will turn around on their agreements.

With all the issues that are popular at the time, a party speaks loudly to that which is popular and you wonder what is slipping by without notice.

Application: When a couple of tribes of Israelites were sent to their own land, their leader reminded them of the promises they were to keep:
Love God
Obey God
Keep His commands
Trust Him
Serve Him

Five promises that would set up these tribes for a bright and hopeful future. And they were all pivotal to God.

There was no need for grand promises, for shallow agreements or for golden handshakes. Their leader knew what would lead to a bright future.

How are we going in keeping those same promises? When we look to our future, are these the promises we are looking to keep?

It’s not a bad list. And although each promise revolves around God, we are the ones who truly benefit.

Prayer: Lord, may I turn my face to You. May it be You I hang all my promises on. Amen.

How are you going in keeping the same 5 promises listed in Joshua 22?
