Drug Abuse

Often when we think of drug abuse we associate such a term to illegal drugs or an addiction.

Job 24:1-25

Reference:  v.23 He may let them rest in a feeling of security, but his eyes are on their ways. (TNIV Bible)

Explore:  I recently heard an interview on LightFM with John Rogerson, the CEO of the Australian Drug Foundation.  Drugs are a huge issue in our society and John was speaking about how parents need to be careful with how they communicate drug use to their children.  Often when we think of drug abuse we associate such a term to illegal drugs or an addiction.  While we do need to be very clear when talking to our children about such drugs it is also important to make them aware of how they use everyday drugs.  John was clear that any kind of drug usage needed to be kept in check.  He posed the question, 'When you have a headache, how quickly will you reach for drugs to help you out?'  While this may seem fairly harmless to an adult we need to be aware that children are always looking at what we are doing and how we respond to a situation.

Application:  When you have children you can't just turn your wisdom off and on because you never know when they will be watching and listening to you.  To speak into the lives of young people with integrity we need to be living up to the standards that we would like them to uphold.  It the same way, we know that God is also looking upon us.  He desires for us to live a life of integrity in a way that brings honour to His love, grace and respect to all.  We always have a choice in how we respond to a situation but the consequences of our choices have a greater impact than just on ourselves.

Prayer:  Lord, You did not create us to live in isolation.  May we be aware of the decisions that we make and how they have an impact on the people around us.  Amen.

Who is affected by the decisions that you make?
