Drops In The Ocean

As Linda is on leave, here is one of her most read posts from over the past few months.

If you could count the times I’d say you are forgiven…

Reference: “This happened because they had not obeyed the Lord their God, but had violated his covenant—all that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded. They neither listened to the commands nor carried them out.” ‭‭2 Kings‬ ‭18:12‬ ‭NIV‬‬
Explore: I was recently listening to a Christian radio station when I heard Hawk Nelson’s song, Drops In The Ocean. The lyrics of the chorus are:
If you wanna know
How far my love can go
Just how deep, just how wide
If you wanna see
How much you mean to me
Look at my hands, look at my side
If you could count the times I’d say you are forgiven
It’s more than the drops in the ocean
This song is a beautiful reminder of God’s love and grace for us. So often we feel we don’t deserve His love but He continues to give it to us anyway.
Application: When I heard this song it made me think of the passages I’ve been reading recently in 2 Kings. If you’re wondering how many times God will forgive you, just read 2 Kings (sure, the words aren’t as catchy as a Hawk Nelson song!)
Generation after generation God forgives His people and gives them another chance. When I read the chapters back to back I can see how generous God is, but then I realise how many years have passed. The people keep doing the wrong thing and God continues to reach out to them.
That is love. That is grace. That is forgiveness.
So, if you’re holding onto something you’ve done wrong, you still have hundreds of years to turn away from God before He will stop forgiving you. Let’s face it, His grace is greater than our sin.
Prayer: Lord, Your love for us far exceeds anything we can imagine. May we learn to accept Your grace and in doing so learn to offer it to others. Amen.
How far has God gone recently to show you He loves you?
