Explore: I recently came to the conclusion that I’m not letting my ‘light’ shine as well as I could. My work has been really busy lately, and I’ve realised that I have let other important things slip because of it. So I was in the car driving through a drive thru and I decided that I could show a stranger love by paying for their meal. After giving my order I was instructed to drive forward to the closest window. It took a little explaining to the young girl at the cash register, but I informed her that I would like to pay for the meal of the person behind me. As I drove forward to the next window I could see in my rear view mirror the young guy behind me chatting to the young girl. He was quite confused and kept looking at my car then talking to the young girl. My order was not large and I soon had my food and was moving off. As I moved off, I gave the young man a wave and he gave me a huge smile and a big wave as I left. I’m not sure what was going through his mind, but it felt so good to be thinking about others instead of myself for once.
Application: Paying for someone’s fast food is not going to change the world, but it was an important process for me to go through to remind myself that it’s not all about me. We don’t know how our love in action is going to impact others, but each time we live out God’s love, then we are heading towards a closer relationship with Him. As a way of remembering God’s grace to the Israelites, they were to set apart the firstborn of their people and animals. I like how they were to explain it to be like ‘a sign on your hand and a symbol on your forehead’. It was important for them to have tangible ways to remember God’s love and grace, and I think it’s just as important for us today.
Prayer: Lord, there is nothing we can do that would repay you for what you’ve done for us. Help us to be active in showing love and grace so that we are reminded of all you’ve done for us. Amen.
What can you do today to show love and grace to others?
