Don’t Hesitate

There I stood, looking down at the water, terrified of taking the leap.

Genesis 19:1-29

Reference: When he hesitated, the men grasped his hand and the hands of his wife and of his two daughters and led them safely out of the city, for the Lord was merciful to them. (‭Genesis‬ ‭19‬:‭16‬ NIV)

Explore: Have you ever stood on top of something high and challenged yourself to jump into the water? I learned pretty quickly that this was one of my greatest fears.

I was the kid who climbed all the way to the top of the diving platform but stood there frozen not able to make the jump. And then I had to walk back down the steps, squeezing past everyone else in the line, to get back to the ground. The walk of shame!

When I was 18 I found myself on a white water rafting trip. It was the most gutsy thing I had ever done in my life up to that point.

Part of the adventure was jumping off a rock face into the water. We’d then swim back to our rafts to continue on the journey.

There I stood, looking down at the water, terrified of taking the leap.

People had gone before me, so I knew I was safe. Our guides were instructing us to do it, so I knew we were being looking after. And our rafts were already in the water, so I had no option but to jump. But I still hesitated.

Finally my embarrassment overtook me and I jumped… screaming all the way!

Application: There are times in our lives when we know what is best for us and yet we still hesitate.

Lot faced the same challenge. The city he lived in was incredibly corrupt and was about to be burned to the ground, but he still hesitated to leave.

We can get so attached to things or situations that even when it’s time to let go, we hesitate. Sometimes we don’t know what is best for ourselves.

I love how the Lord’s men took Lot by the hand when he hesitated. He needed that extra courage to leave.

God will do the same for us. He finds a way to take us by the hand and lead us where we need to be. When that happens, don’t let go of God’s hand.

Prayer: Lord, show us Your guiding hand. Lead us where it’s best for us to go. Amen.

Where is God trying to lead you?
