Defeating The Past

He had not taken a drink in 13 years.

2 Samuel 8:1-18

Explore: One of the characters in a TV show I recently watched was an alcoholic. His past was filled with shameful stories, but he had been attending AA meetings and had not taken a drink in 13 years.

Something tragic happened to him and although he had access to a mentor and could have attended an AA meeting, instead he went to a bar and had a drink. One led to two which led to a weekend long bender.

13 years of sobriety disappeared in one mouthful as he tried to drink away his pain.

Application: Now, I know this is just a fictitious character in a TV series, but it reminded me that often our struggles do not go away. And it seems it’s been this way since the fall.

One of David’s earliest accomplishments was defeating Goliath, the Philistine. As a boy he stood before the giant of a man and felled him with just a small rock.

Years later we read in 2 Samuel 8 that “David defeated the Philistines and subdued them”. They were still causing David trouble and he was still doing battle with them.

I find there are things in our own lives that keep popping up that we need to defeat. It may not be an addiction or a nation, but maybe an attitude or an opinion.

Things keep coming up in our lives that distract us from following God’s calling. Once we have conquered them once it does not mean they disappear completely.

Thankfully for us we have a Saviour who conquered the grave once and for all. So no matter how many times our demons come to haunt or distract us, we have the power of the One who defeated death by our side.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for being stronger than anything we need to conquer. May we lean into Your strength and power when we need it. Amen.

What is the philistine in your life that keeps distracting you from your calling?
