Country Folk

Nothing tells of Warrandyte’s country feel more than peak hour in the morning.

Explore: The suburb of Melbourne I live in is called Warrandyte. It is a beautiful, tree-filled suburb with a river that runs right through the middle.

While it is situated in one of Australia’s major cities, it has kept its rural feel. The community has worked hard to stop any fast food shops or major industries from coming into the local area.

Nothing tells of Warrandyte’s country feel more than peak hour in the morning.

As Warrandyte has one of the few bridges that cross the river, the traffic gets very congested. There is, however, an unwritten rule that you let entering traffic in.

At one particular T-intersection it is common practice to have one car go, then one car is let in, one car goes, then another car is let in. Even though some cars have been sitting in stop-start traffic for over 2 kilometres they will still let people in.

We recently had a traffic company come and monitor the level of traffic congestion over the bridge. They couldn’t believe that anyone would let cars go before them.

In fact, their computer system did not have the capability of capturing such behaviour. So they had to set up a fake set of traffic lights in their program that only let one car through at a time to demonstrate the flow of traffic.

When asked why people would let other cars in they were told, “We’re just nice country folk, it’s what we do.”

Application: I love being a part of such a good community. I also love that people were able to see we were different to “normal” city folk by our positive actions.

This is true, too, when it comes to Christians. Jesus said that people will know we follow Him by how we love others.

If someone observed your actions would they know you followed Christ?

God’s love is not something that is normal or even something that is programmed in once we accept Jesus as our Lord. Showing Christ’s love is something we need to work on every single day. But when we do, it will change the world.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for the love we have received from You. There is none like it. May we strive to love others as You loved us so they, too, may be drawn to Your wonder and grace. Amen.

If someone observed your actions, how would they know you followed Christ?
