Copycat Lives

We can be similar to our parents but we still bend to make our lives our own.

2 Kings 14:1-29

Reference: “He (Azariah) was the one who rebuilt Elath and restored it to Judah after Amaziah (his father) rested with his ancestors.” ‭‭2 Kings‬ ‭14:22‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Explore: My cousin, Henry, is a second generation Australian farmer. His father immigrated to Australia and established a great farm in the western district of Victoria.

While Henry has taken on the family farm, he has done so in his own way. He has upgraded the dairy and progressed forward with the current day technology.

He also seems to have taken a different attitude towards farming as well. Where his father would have rarely missed a milking session, Henry prioritises time with family and schedules weekends off with a relief worker.

Even the farm house looks different as they built an extension and have made it their own.

It is great to take the baton from our previous generations, but it is important to define it as our own.

Application: We can be similar in actions and personality to our parents and their parents but we still make our lives our own.

When the Bible lists all the kings in 2 Kings you can hear about the different decisions they made. Even when the crown is handed to the next generation they decide which gods to follow and what areas to focus on.

There is no point copying the previous generation as our time is now different and our passions change. To be true to yourself, and to how God has made you, you must find your own individual passion. What has God put within you to accomplish at this time?

There is so much we can do for God and with God, let’s not restrict ourselves to what our parents did, but connect our minds to God and live for what He has placed in us for today.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for our history. Our family have helped us to be who we are today. But may we not be restricted to that past. Help us to see our future with You and move forward passionately to fulfil Your call on our lives. Amen.

What has God put within you to accomplish at this time?
