One day it was suggested that this would be a good idea and it seems to have stuck.
Hebrews 8:1-13
Reference: v.10 This is the covenant I will establish with the house of Israel
after that time, declares the Lord. I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. (NIV Bible)
Explore: Winter in Melbourne can be very cold and so heating up the house becomes a high priority. If you walk in the back door to our house you will come through the laundry and then into our main living area. It has become a habit for each member of our family to close the laundry door behind them during winter. This was not something we automatically did during summer but if we leave the laundry door open then we heat up an area that doesn't need to be warm. By closing the door we have a smaller area to heat and so the living area heats up quicker and we don't waste as much energy. One day it was suggested that this would be a good idea and it seems to have stuck. No one has to nag about closing the laundry door; we all know that we will be warmer and happier if it is shut. And so now it has become a common habit for us to do so.
Application: Wouldn't it be good if we were able to make other important things a common habit too? It seems to take me a great deal more effort to make exercise a common habit! Even though I know it is good for me and I am happier if I do exercise, it often gets pushed aside and is not made into a common habit. This is the same when it comes to prayer time or reading the Bible time. It can sometimes take a lot of effort to make these common habits. However, that is the desire of God's heart: that His law will be in our minds and written on our hearts. If that is the case then obeying God becomes like a common habit, it is our natural inclination as it is so deeply set into our lives. That is the desire of God and the desire of all disciples that we will know God so well that we will automatically follow in His ways.
Prayer: Lord, often we can feel distant from You. May we strive to know You so completely that our words are Your words; our actions Your actions. Amen.
What part of your relationship with God needs to become more of a common habit?
