I have not yet met someone who is sinless where their actions totally match up with their words and beliefs
Reference: The one whose walk is blameless, who does what is righteous, who speaks the truth from their heart. (Psalm 15.2)
Explore: My friend, Leslie, was telling me about a housemate of hers that grew up in the church but now refuses to attend. She had explained to Leslie that she still believed in God but Christians were hypocrites and so she didn’t want to go to church and hang out with them.
Leslie mentioned to her housemate that she was a Christian, did she not want to hang out with her? “No”, she said, “you’re different.”
This was nice to say to Leslie, but it was actually a lie. Leslie is no different to any other Christian. Yes, she is a hypocrite too. And so am I. And you probably are too.
In fact, every person is a hypocrite. I have not yet met someone who is sinless where their actions totally match up with their words and beliefs. It’s not called being a Christian; it’s being a human.
Application: It’s sad when people stop coming to church and I struggle when they use the hypocrite line. Yes, it’s true but unfortunately they, too, are a hypocrite.
Thankfully hypocrites are not exempt from God’s grace. The Psalmist whose walk is blameless and none of us can give a confident ‘yes’, except once we add Jesus into the mix.
Jesus was blameless, perfect and a man of integrity, not a hypocrite. When we add Him into our lives then the way we live is changed and the way God sees us is transformed.
Prayer: Lord, forgive us when our actions turn people away from You. May Your presence be so real in our lives that people are drawn to You instead. Amen.
How would you respond to Leslie’s friend when she said that Christians are hypocrites?
