People can justify moving away from the church because of this matter.
Reference: And praise be to God Most High, who delivered your enemies into your hand.” Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything. (Genesis 14:20 NIV)
Explore: One of the most contentious issues people have with church is that they ask for money all the time. People can justify moving away from the church because of this matter.
Our Current Affairs tv program will do a segment every year on how churches ask for money and what they’re doing with it. They’ll never focus on the local and overseas mission aspect of the church, but just that they actually ask people for money.
It’s funny how, when you are outside the church, money seems like it’s everything. And yet when you are inside the church, a tithe is giving back to God what He’s already blessed you with.
Application: When Abram had come back from winning a battle, he gave a tenth of what he had gained to the priest. This wasn’t his normal income but he still gave.
The priest didn’t have to give an offering talk or guilt him into giving to God, it was an automatic response to the God who had been with him.
God doesn’t need your money. But He rejoices in a cheerful giver.
Prayer: Lord, forgive us when we are so fixated on the things that are not important. Amen.
How joyful are you in giving?
