Check Your References

When he asked me what kind of challenge my friend would bring to him I decided to be brutally honest.

Psalm 52:1-9

Reference: For what you have done I will always praise you in the presence of your faithful people. And I will hope in your name, for your name is good. (Psalm 52:9 NIV)

Explore: I was recently called and asked to give a reference for a friend of mine. This friend is a great mate and would be an asset to any team.

By the end of the reference check I could tell that my friend would get the job and that this was just a part of the employment process. But the employer was doing well in his due diligence and was open to learning more about his new employee.

When he asked me what kind of challenge my friend would bring to him I decided to be brutally honest. I felt that, at times, my friend saw himself as better than those in leadership above him, and he would speak negatively about them behind their backs.

The employer appreciated my honesty and was happy to work on that with my friend if it was to ever be an issue.

I do love my friend but I thought it was important for both my friend, as well as the new employer, that I was totally honest.

Application: Our words and actions do not go unnoticed. We often think that we can get away with things, but they inevitably come back to us.

That is why we can always find words of praise for our God. He has displayed honesty, love and justice in all His actions. And it’s what we should strive towards too.

Prayer: Lord, we know that we are not perfect. Give us the discipline to keep striving to be more like You. Amen.
