To be honest, I’m struggling to celebrate with her
Reference: “May we shout for joy over your victory and lift up our banners in the name of our God. May the Lord grant all your requests.” Psalm 20:5 NIV
Explore: An old school associate has done very well for herself. She is excelling in her chosen profession and is making quite a name for herself.
To be honest, I’m struggling to celebrate with her. At school she was very judgmental and particularly rude to those she deemed beneath her – which was pretty much everyone except her select group of friends.
And yet, my celebration does not affect her. In fact, she may not even remember me! But it does affect me.
I am the only one left with resentment and negativity. It’s not like her success has brought my decline, we don’t even work in the same field.
But I fear I am not alone. Often we don’t rejoice in other people’s success and it only makes us bitter. Our aim is to always make ourselves better rather than bitter.
Application: The writer of Psalm 20 was clearly in a good place. And he was keen to rejoice in other people’s success.
That is how we should live too, bringing blessing to people rather than judging them from afar.
Many lives are highly publicised and open for scrutiny in the media today. Let’s not get sucked into the world of gossip, judgment and tearing others down.
May we take on the words of Psalm 20 and “shout for joy over your victory and lift up our banners in the name of our God.”
Prayer: Lord, we are all Your children. You love us all equally and want what’s best for each of us. May we show the same love and respect for others. Amen.
Who can you lift up and bless this week?
