I think that’s why I heard the siren so clearly.
Reference: They also carried off Abram’s nephew Lot and his possessions, since he was living in Sodom. (Genesis 14:12 NIV)
Explore: It was an obvious case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
I had meant to leave work right on time but I’d been drawn into a last minute meeting and struggled to leave. That meant the traffic was heavier and I felt I was running late the whole way home.
I’d stopped at some lights and was waiting for the lights to go green. As I was already feeling a little stressed I decided to turn the radio off to give myself some quiet.
I think that’s why I heard the siren so clearly. The fire truck came quickly around the corner with its lights flashing and it swept towards the intersection and through the red light.
Because I had heard the siren and was looking out for the emergency vehicle, I had paused at the lights, even though they had turned green. Unfortunately, the car behind me had not been so observant.
Instead of waiting patiently the driver anticipated I would move forward and lunged straight into the back of my car. I jolted forward and my eyes went straight for the rear view mirror to determine what had happened.
The last thing I wanted that night was to be in a car accident and yet here I was.
Application: Sometimes things happen to us that we cannot control. We don’t plan for them and cannot anticipate them happening, but they still cross our paths.
Some are little troubles – like my car accident – but some can be truly traumatic events that we could never have prevented.
Lot found himself caught up in someone else’s war. The city he had moved to was taken and he and his family with it!
Thankfully, his story does not end as a hostage in someone else’s land, but I bet there was a moment when he didn’t know how it was all going to end. It’s in these moments that our faith is tested.
Although God does not stop all of life’s traumas, He commits to being there with us through every situation. As you navigate the hurdles, don’t forget to call out to Him.
Prayer: Lord, life can bring some real trials. Help us to lean on You when we can’t see our way forward. Amen.
What challenges has your life served up to you?
