Explore: The radio Breakfast show I work for has thousands of people listening to it every day. We love to get our listeners involved in our station through running competitions that they can play, hosting special events for them to turn up to and providing opportunities to hear their opinions during our shows. Nine times out of ten this interaction is very positive. We have a great group of listeners who go out of their way to support the station. However, every now and then we receive a message from someone needs to vent their displeasure. We certainly listen to their opinion respectfully however there are occasions when their complaint seems to be unwarranted. After chatting to the person involved we discover that there are many underlying stresses in their life and they have used their complaint as an outlet of other issues that are going on for them. Often when you dig a little deeper you can find that there is a great deal of hurt and pain in these people’s lives and often they struggle to love themselves and so they struggle to love others too.
Application: I know that when I’m in a bad mood I struggle not to take it out on other people. Likewise, if we don’t love ourselves for who God created us to be then we struggle to truly love others… or we struggle to allow others to love us. ‘Who could love me when I’m so ugly and stupid.’ If we really want to love others we need to discover how to love ourselves. How can we believe that God made everyone beautiful if we think of ourselves as an exception to the rule. It is when we are able to appreciate ourselves then we are able to love our spouses, our families, our friends and our colleagues with more patience and respect.
Prayer: Lord, may we see others as part of your amazing creation but may we also include ourselves in that beauty. Amen.
What do you really think about yourself?
