We are given a snapshot of some of the mighty men who fought for David
2 Samuel 23.1-39
Reference: v. 10a …but he (Eleazar) stood his ground and struck down the Philistines till his hand grew tired and froze to the sword.
Explore: Here the writer is going back through the mighty men that fought for David and giving certain acknowledgements for those who showed bravery, courage and great success.
Application: This passage reminds me of all my uncles sitting around telling yarns of times gone by. Sure enough there are few stories about battles and killing in our family history (!!) but it brings the feel of someone reminiscing. While it is very easy for the past to be looked upon with rose-coloured glasses, it is an important method of reflection and learning to be able to gain renewed courage and learning from the things that have happened before us.
The Bible was written thousands of years ago and it is through pouring over it's pages and exploring more of God's history, that we are able to get a deeper understanding of God.
Prayer: Lord, you are eternal. You were in the beginning and will be forever. May I learn from the past and forever hold you in my future. Amen.
