Reference: Many, Lord my God, are the wonders you have done, the things you planned for us.
None can compare with you; were I to speak and tell of your deeds, they would be too many to declare. (Psalm 40:5)
Explore: The best thing happened to me yesterday. It was totally unexpected and it made me smile for the rest of the day.
I was standing at the checkout of the supermarket. As I waited for the attendant to start scanning my groceries, I noticed a mum with her teenage son walk past. Their familiarity didn’t strike me straight away, but when I took a second glance at the young man, I realised it was James.
10 years ago I had mentored James through a program called Kids Hope Aus. Every week we had got together to look at some school work, play some games and just generally get to know each other.
We had got along well, and I had also been able to assist his family with some meals. But after just 18 months James had moved school. This was not unusual for at risk families, but I had been sad to see him go. I saw him a few times after he left school, but when his family moved house, I lost contact completely.
That was until now. I hesitated, but decided to call out. He turned around and recognised me straight away. He came over and gave me a hug and I couldn’t believe this tiny little boy I had mentored was now a Year 12 student with facial hair!
We caught up – as much as you can in a supermarket checkout! – and I was so proud to hear that he was still at school and had even become a school house captain. He was so keen to catch up further and we exchanged numbers for further contact.
Application: While I was so proud of this young man, I really couldn’t take any credit for his development. Our time together had been fleeting, but I just praised the Lord that He had looked out for James.
Without me even knowing, God had taken care of him and his family, and I was truly blessed to have Him bring James back into my life. We couldn’t possibly keep track of all the great things God does for us. Every now and again we are blown away by His wonder, but if we took some time each day, we would find God’s great deeds every single day.
Prayer: Lord, thank You for having great plans for our lives. We are not worthy, but we want to refocus ourselves to give You the glory You deserve. Amen.
What great deed has God done today?
