My reinvention of this saying would be: 'Behind every great person there are many great people.'
Reference: v. 13 "Say you are my sister, so that I will be treated well for your sake and my life will be spared because of you." (NIV Bible)
Explore: There is a well known saying: 'Behind every great man is a great woman.' This certainly seems true in this passage about Abram. It seems that Sarai made a great sacrifice in saying that she was Abram's sister instead of his wife so that the Egyptians would treat Abram well. I must admit that I never really had a great impression of Sarai. The more elaborate stories we hear of Sarai certainly highlight her darker side. She bullies her maidservant because she bears a child to Abram, even when it was Sarai's idea for her to lie with him. She doubts God's ability to allow her to conceive and then lies about her doubt. And yet, because of her actions in Egypt Abram's life was spared and he acquired many servants and livestock. It seems that behind Abram was a great woman in Sarai.
Application: However, I believe the genders in this saying can be interchangable, and also made plural. My reinvention of this saying would be: 'Behind every great person there are many great people.' We often undermine the people who work behind the scenes, however they are all integral to someone becoming great. While one person may receive the credit you can guarantee there have been numerous amounts of people behind them giving them support, encouragement and aid. We are created to work in community. When many people work together they are able to accomplish so much more. While only one person may receive the acknowledgement, let's not forget all the people who constantly work behind the scenes.
Prayer: Lord, you created us all with different gifts and talents. May we acknowledge and encourage each person who participates in our work today. Amen.
Who are some of the great people behind you? Who are the great people that you work for?
