As Time Goes By

Our six year old couldn’t wait and each week would count the days until the next game.

Genesis 29:15-30

Reference: So Jacob served seven years to get Rachel, but they seemed like only a few days to him because of his love for her. (‭Genesis‬ ‭29‬:‭20‬ NIV)

Explore: At six and eight years of age we signed our boys up to play football on Saturday mornings during Winter. They were so excited.

Our six year old couldn’t wait and each week would count the days until the next game. On Saturday afternoon he would ask, “how many days until footy again?” The week would take forever to go past!

As a child, time seems to tick over so slowly. I, too, remember being frustrated at how slowly time turned over when all I wanted to do was be older.

In my first year of school I distinctly remember drinking from the bubbler taps and seeing a group of grade six children run past. I thought, “It’s going to take forever for me to be that old!”

Well, I did get to grade six, and I finished high school, and I completed university. And now I look back and even just at 36 years of age, I can see how quickly time passes by.

I’ve been married for 13 years, we’ve been foster parents for 8 years, I’ve been doing these blogs for 7 years…

When you start things you don’t know where it will lead, and all you can do is focus on one day at a time, but gradually time just keeps ticking by.

Application: I remember reading the story of Jacob marrying Laban’s daughter and being baffled that Jacob could work for seven years before marrying someone he loved. And then hearing of how Laban deceived him by giving him the wrong daughter, I couldn’t believe this was in the Bible!

As a child, seven years was a lifetime. And I must say, even now I rarely look or plan seven years ahead.

But looking back, I can see how God is faithful in different ways through different years. The more time that goes past, the more opportunity God has to mould me and draw me closer to His will.

Now I’m starting to feel like time goes too quickly, so I’m trying to teach myself to just take one day at a time and make the most of every moment God has blessed me with.

Prayer: Lord, for someone who has existed forever and will live for eternity, time probably takes on a whole new meaning for You! Help me to live every day with Your love and grace. Amen.
