Are You Havin’ A Laugh?

It would be better to have laughter than food

Psalm 126:1-6

Reference: v.2 Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy. Then it was said among the nations, “The Lord has done great things for them.” (TNIV Bible)

Explore: I love the taste of Nutella on a big, fluffy slice of fresh, white bread. My mouth drools at the smell of meat frying on the BBQ.

Nothing tops the taste sensation of smooth, creamy chocolate melting in my mouth. Although my Mum’s roast pork and vegetables comes very close!

I certainly love my food and I love to fill my mouth with amazing tasty delights. However, there is nothing that is greater than a ‘mouth filled with laughter’.

On the Australian version of Big Brother the housemates were divided into two groups – Red team & Blue team. Neither team could talk to members of the other team.

It just so happened that the Blue team won lots of delicious food to eat, whereas the Red team only had bare basics. The Blue team enjoyed eating their gourmet delights, however, they couldn’t help hear the laughter and frivolity coming from the Red team.

The Red team were all funny characters and enjoyed each other’s company. While the Blue team had food, they did not have strong relationships.

Every member in the house – on both the Blue and the Red teams – agreed that it would be better to have the laughter of the Red team than the food of the Blue team. Food is good; Laughter is better.

Application: To be honest, I don’t always feel like laughing. There are times in my life when I feel stressed, tired and anxious and laughter is the last thing on my mind.

However, when I get around a group of friends who always make me laugh, I feel like the weight of the world is lifted from my shoulders.

The Lord is the greatest bearer of joy. While He bring love, grace and mercy we should not forget that He also brings laughter.

Laughter is one of the great gifts that He gives to each of us. May we discover its value today and help to share this gift with everyone we meet.

Prayer: Lord, it is easy to be weighed down by all the troubles of the world. Help us to look to You for pure joy and be reminded that You also love to laugh. Amen.

What do you think makes God laugh?
