Apricot Jam vs Marmalade

Bread is my most favourite food in all the world. I mean, I love chocolate, ice cream, cheese, roasts, lasagne, risottos, rice, Indian, Thai, pizza, and chips. But bread is my all time favourite.

I was recently making a piece of toast for my breakfast. As I spread the apricot jam over my toast I suddenly paused. It was apricot jam, wasn’t it?

You see, marmalade looks exactly like apricot jam but I would never want to get the two confused. Apricot jam is sweet and lovely and delicious. Marmalade is sour and bitter and heinous. It would tarnish my wonderful bread.

I quickly looked at the label on the jar and was relieved to see that yes, it was apricot jam. All was well with the world and my breakfast was saved.

It’s amazing that two things that look so similar can have such a different impact.

This is how I feel we should be as Christians. If you put us beside someone who had no faith we should look the same. But if you engaged with us you should experience something that is lovely and wonderful and gracious.

I want to be apricot jam for others. I want them to walk away feeling as though they have experienced something positive.

Jesus told us that people would know we are Christians by our love. May our love shine forth in such a strong way that people won’t be able to deny our faith.

Lord, You have given us such amazing love. May we just reflect that back to those we meet so Your name may be praised. Amen.

How can you be apricot jam for people today?
