Many Christians decide not to drink alcohol because they see the negative impact it can have on people who become drunk or are addicted to the liquid.
1 Corinthians 8:1-13

Explore: Alcohol is always an interesting issue in Christian circles. My husband and I don’t drink alcohol, and while many assume it’s because of our religion they are surprised to hear that it’s actually due to our tastebuds instead. However, many Christians decide not to drink alcohol because they see the negative impact it can have on people who become drunk or are addicted to the liquid. If they are encouraging these people to abstain from drinking alcohol then they feel that they must do the same – even if they are not addicted to the substance. I guess, in the same way, I also try to be a good example to those around me in other areas of life. If I am encouraging people to love God and love others then I need to be doing that in my own life too. Our actions speak loudly to those who are around us.
Application: In chapter 8 of 1 Corinthians Paul is speaking to some dedicated and intelligent believers. But even he warns them to watch their behaviour. While they may have worked through the theology of their actions there may be others watching who have less understanding but still follow their lead. Our actions have an impact on other people and so we must be considerate in helping all people to make wise decisions, not just hold concern for only ourselves.
Prayer: Lord, You created us to live in community. May we be committed, not just to our own faith development, but to the wider community that we live in. Amen.
Who is impacted by the decisions that you make?
